Most of my patents are mechanical in nature and I have designed and engineered many other products that required mechanical and/or structural performance. The list includes furniture, commercial and industrial equipment, mechanical products and retail and trade show displays for example.
Often a client will request a very accurate analysis of the performance of a design before any prototypes are made. This can often be accomplished with Finite Element Analysis. FEA studies are sophisticated computer simulations that can determine the structural characteristics of a particular material/design combination. Many properties can be studied including how a plastic resin will flow through a mold and how a molded material will deform and/or fail under stress in use.
